The Three Little Kittens

I found these three colorful little kittens at the thrift store and realized at once that they needed to come and live at my house.

Here are some ideas or suggestions of how you could use this as a toy or story prop.

1.  Create a Susan Munzer story basket.  Gather all the items needed for the Three Little Kittens story.  I encourage you to use items you have around the house.  Children don't demand perfection, they are so awesome that way! Place your story props in a basket and cover with a cloth.  When you are ready to tell the story, lay out the cloth (to define the space) and start with, "Once upon a time..."  The children will love and respond to the three dimensional style of story-telling.

2.  Find a small tray and put the kittens on it with a cloth or small pieces of fabric, and small bowl for milk,  maybe a tiny felted ball, or some furniture.  Be creative!  The children will know what to do!

3.  Find an array of kitten books.  Display them in an inviting way on a shelf and arrange the kittens nearby.

4.  Cut out the story pieces for a flannelboard story.  After doing the story repetitively  in group time, allow the children to use the pieces themselves.  These little kitties could be in a small basket with a cloth to go with.  Allow the children to use as they like.

5.  These little kittens might like to play in play-do.  Don't you think they would look really lovely standing on top of a mirror that's lying flat on the table and then offer some balls of play do as well....invite the children, see what they do.

6. You could do a mitten matching game....the three little kittens could help!  Purple, blue and red.....which belong to who and each needs two!!

I added the poem here FYI only, but feel free to adapt it as you like.  Use the idea and experiment with switching it up to suit your self.

Three little kittens they lost their mittens, and they began to cry,
"Oh mother dear, we sadly fear that we have lost our mittens."
"What! Lost your mittens, you naughty kittens!
Then you shall have no pie."
"Meeow, meeow, meeow, now we shall have no pie."
The three little kittens they found their mittens,
And they began to cry,
"Oh mother dear, see here, see here
For we have found our mittens."
"Put on your mittens, you silly kittens
And you shall have some pie"
"Meeow, meeow, meeow,
Now let us have some pie."
The three little kittens put on their mittens
And soon ate up the pie,
"Oh mother dear, we greatly fear
That we have soiled our mittens."
"What! soiled you mittens, you naughty kittens!"
Then they began to cry, "Meeow, meeow, meeow"
Then they began to sigh.
The three little kittens they washed their mittens
And hung them out to dry,
"Oh mother dear, do you not hear
That we have washed our mittens."
"What! washed your mittens, you are good kittens."
But I smell a rat close by,
"Meeow, meeow, meeow" we smell a rat close by...
